Sky Sports Olympians help Oakwood students

On Friday 13th January 2017, The Oakwood Academy students and the PE department had the privilege of working alongside two Olympians. Pictured below are Oakwood students and Maria Bertelli and Rachel Laybourne who were both part of the 2012 Team GB Volleyball Squad. The athlete mentors were working with us through the Sky Sports initiative we have been involved with for two years now. They led sessions on developing essential skills for life

The six keys to success are:

  1. Mental toughness
  2. Hunger to achieve
  3. People skills
  4. Sports and life knowledge
  5. Breaking barriers
  6. Planning for success

The six keys to success are designed to help young people develop valuable life skills that will help them in and outside of school, now and into the future. The session was very inspirational and for our students to be working with Olympians delivering such positive messages has been an invaluable experience. We will be looking to bring them back in again to deliver a session to our GCSE PE cohort in March to motivate and enthuse our students at a key time in the year for PE (just before our practical moderation window). We feel very privileged to be working with professional athletes who are the ultimate role models for those students with a keen interest in sport.
